T O P I C R E V I E WMarylandSpaceHello CS friends, Any of you going to see Buzz at Shippensburg on Thursday? Hope to see you there.Garry polheineyI'll be there. Ship is my alma mater and I live in Hagerstown. Our local paper had an article on him and his visit yesterday. This will actually be my first astronaut encounter. I'm pretty excited!Pol[Edited by polheiney (October 25, 2006).]spaceheadedI'll be there. I have a brother who lives in nearby Chambersburg and he will be coming along. He usually joins me for astro events in DC; he's thankful this one is so close to home.See you there!BillMarylandSpaceHi Bill and Pol,I live in Hagerstown and teach in Chambersburg so we'll have to connect.GarryMarylandSpaceIf I remember, I will hold up a sign/sheet of paper with "CS" on it. I'm sitting on the right hand side. . . with a beard.GarryejectrI wonder how the crowd will like a beard taking up a seat they could have?! [Edited by ejectr (October 26, 2006).]GlintI'll be at Ships, along with my friend Tom. We've got two beards between the two of us -- guess that's 4 seats taken then? Tom's easy to spot. His beard about reaches his belt.Curt[Edited by Glint (October 26, 2006).]spaceheadedWow! We're building a cS crowd. That's five of us plus four beards, including mine!Bill John K. RochesterAnyone trying for the prized "autograph"?Just don't make him swear on a Bible.....WehaveliftoffBuzz's usually agreeable when he's not with his wife. I want to hear all about today in Pa...polheineyFrom what the director of the auditorium he's speaking at says, Buzz will not be signing autographs (unless you pay the $250) and will not pose for pictures. When Shippensburg first booked him I had heard that there was to be a meet and greet but learned Tuesday night that that is no longer the case. I'm kind of dissapointed. This as to be my first meeting of an astronaut and he happens to be my favorite. I pored over all the possible 8x10s to determine which one I wanted the "To Pol" on. I was going to tell him about how I was devasted when the Challenger exploded and how his appearance on Punky Brewster actually made me feel better. (I know, that's pretty cheesy but it's true!)Oh well. I am looking forward to the presentation.polheineyIncidently, I too have a beard so the beards are 5 for 5.GlintIt was an interesting talk on the "night of the beards." Well worth the drive from Maryland.Garry and Bill -- it was just great seeing you guys again. But I missed Pol; did either of you two bump into him?Be seeing you one week from tongiht at the Vice Adm. Donald D. Engen Flight Jacket Night in DC?spaceheadedNice seeing familiar faces, Garry and Curt. Tom, too. Didn't run into Pol...I think there were too many others wearing the same facial hair. It was a pleasant evening with Dr. Aldrin. Wished they would have allowed pictures, at least at the beginning or end. Of course, no chance for any autographs, either.Yes, Curt, I'll be at NASM for Flight Jacket Night. See you there!Bill polheineyI was there. I met Garry who seems to be a really nice guy. He found out I am new to CS and really made me feel welcome. He really did hold up a sign reading "CS."It is too bad there was no opportunity to meet Dr. Aldrin. According to the stage manager he and his wife left immediately after the presentation. There was a dinner before the lecture but that was just for the big donation people.I'll be going down to the NASM next Friday. I guess that will be my first chance to actually meet an astronaut and it will be three of them!John K. Rochester........3 "biggies" in the history of Manned Spaceflight.MarylandSpaceThursday night was a nice night.Reconnected with Curt and connected with Bill and Pol. . . my CS sign did work. I had a great chat with all three of them prior to the presentation.Probably 1,200 in attendance in the Luhrs Center (a fantastic site). Along with seeing five local teachers that I knew, there was a busload of students from Nanticoke, PA (144 miles away). That impresses me.May have been a "fundraiser" for ASF and the admission of $15 was quite reasonable. There was a nice video, talk, and slide show. Also, Buzz fielded questions from the audience, mostly from youngsters.I learned that Buzz's dad made his solo flight in 1917, and that Buzz has been to the North Pole and the Titanic. There were no photo or autograph opportunities. . . I brought a one of his books and photos just in case.It was about 20 years ago and about 150 yards away that I heard my first astronaut presentation: SCOTT CARPENTER! This hobby/passion has been a great journey that I hope will continue for a long time.GarryBMckayGarry, email me. I tried to send something it it didn't go.BryanGlint quote:Originally posted by MarylandSpace:...I learned ... that Buzz has been to the North Pole ...This is a little off topic, but I received an e-mail not too long ago offering a similar opportunity next summer, ice breaker and all.
